FEMAP
V9:
Femap is based on an advanced set of open technologies that enable it to work simply and easily within customer engineering simulation environments. Femap is primarily based on Parasolid, which ensures direct access to some 35% of the world’s digital product definition data. In addition, a number of state-of-the-art geometric extensions ensure that Femap is able to work with geometry from virtually any source, directly and seamlessly. Femap also works with an unusually broad range of finite element solver solutions. This makes Femap a very logical and flexible solution that is simply tailored for even the most demanding customer needs. FEMAP is capable of interfacing freely as a pre/post processor for many FEA packages, including NASTRAN and ABAQUS, our FEA packages of choice (see below). Its flexibility has proven ideal for a multidisciplinary organisation such as FEA Online.

NX NASTRAN:
Based on the same MSC.Nastran source code that was commercially available prior to September, 2003, NX Nastran is a premium computer-aided engineering (CAE) tool that major manufacturers worldwide rely on for their critical engineering computing needs to produce safe, reliable and optimized designs within increasingly shorter design cycle times. For over 30 years, MSC.Nastran has been the analysis solution of choice in almost every major industry including aerospace, defense, automotive, shipbuilding, heavy machinery, medical and consumer products – an industry standard for the computer-aided analysis of stress, vibration, structural failure/durability, heat transfer, noise/acoustics and flutter/aeroelasticity.

NX NASTRAN, NONLINEAR:
NX Nastran - Nonlinear enables you to analyze models with material nonlinearities or geometric nonlinearities (that is, large deformations) or with parts contacting each other. This means you can investigate small-strain nonlinear elasticity, large-strain hyperelasticity and plasticity effects, as well as viscoelasticity (creep) and nonlinear buckling and post-buckling situations like snap-through events. You can also investigate nonlinear normal modes. An add-on module of NX Nastran - Basic, Nonlinear allows you to simulate large deformations; better understand what happens when a product's material properties approach yield and the plastic range; study creep; simulate two or more parts coming into contact (gap and slideline); and evaluate nonlinear buckling.

ABAQUS is a highly sophisticated, general purpose finite element program, designed primarily to model the behavior of solids and structures under externally applied loading. ABAQUS includes the following features:
- Capabilities for both static and dynamic problems
- The ability to model very large shape changes in solids, in both two and three dimensions
- A very extensive element library, including a full set of continuum elements, beam elements, shell and plate elements, among others.
- A sophisticated capability to model contact between solids
- An advanced material library, including the usual elastic and elastic – plastic solids; models for foams, concrete, soils, piezoelectric materials, and many others.
- Capabilities to model a number of phenomena of interest, including vibrations, coupled fluid/structure interactions, acoustics, buckling problems, and so on.
The main strength of ABAQUS, however, is that it is based on a very sound theoretical framework. As a practicing engineer, you may be called upon to make crucial decisions based on the results of computer simulations. While no computer program can ever be guaranteed free of bugs, ABAQUS is among the more trustworthy codes. For this reason, ABAQUS is used by a wide range of industries, including aircraft manufacturers, automobile companies, oil companies and microelectronics industries, as well as national laboratories and research universities.
ABAQUS is written and maintained by Hibbitt, Karlsson and Sorensen, Inc (HKS), which has headquarers in Pawtucket, RI. The company was founded in 1978 (by graduates of Brown’s Ph.D. program in solid mechanics), and today has several hundred employees with offices around the world.
Note: ABAQUS is used by FEA Online for specialist applications such as pressure vessel stress linearisation.
